What are the 10 points of Zelenskyy’s peace plan?
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has been actively promoting his 10-point peace plan, talking about it with Joe Biden, among other international leaders, and urging them to host a global peace summit based on it.
Zelenskiy’s 10-Point Peace Plan includes :
- Radiation and nuclear safety, with a focus on reestablishing security around Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, which is currently under Russian occupation and houses Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
- Security of the food supply, particularly securing and defending Ukraine’s grain exports to the world’s poorest countries.
- Energy security, with a focus on pricing restraints on Russian energy sources and assistance in rebuilding Ukraine’s power infrastructure, which has been devastated to a large extent by Russian strikes.
- release of all detainees, including war captives and children sent to Russia as deportees.
- Restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and having Russia reaffirm it in accordance with the UN Charter are “not negotiable,” according to Zelenskyy.
- Russian troops leaving the area, hostilities ending, and the reestablishment of Ukraine’s state borders with Russia.
- Justice, includes the creation of a unique court to try Russian war criminals.
- Ecocide prevention and environmental protection, with a focus on demining and repairing water treatment facilities
- A security infrastructure in the Euro-Atlantic region is being built, with assurances for Ukraine included, in order to stop the war from escalating.
- confirmation of the conclusion of the conflict, together with a document signed by the parties concerned.
President Zelenskyy’s global peace summit proposal
President Zelenskyy proposed a global peace summit that would concentrate on the peace plan “as a whole or some key areas in particular” in December, and he pleaded with the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) countries to embrace the initiative.
What has the world’s reaction been?
Russia rejected this plan, stating once more that it would not cede any of the lands it had seized forcibly—which makes up about a quarter of Ukraine’s area.
Although the West, backed by the US, has given Ukraine financial and military backing, it was leery of Zelenskiy’s peace plan and his suggested peace summit. The G7 leaders have vowed to restore peace to Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter’s provisions for human rights.
