What is Moon Time Zone?
Moon Time Zone has been proposed as an universal timekeeping system that will simplify communication and coordination among various lunar missions. The suggestion was put forward in response to the growing number of lunar missions being prepared for and launched by many nations and organisations, some of which will include Japan’s M1 lunar lander and the Houston-based Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander. Future space explorations, maybe including the establishment of a Martian time zone, will benefit from its construction.
Why is Moon Time Zone in the News?
A lunar time zone has recently been proposed for by the European Space Agency (ESA). To establish it, it has called for international support and consensus. Determining whether lunar time should be set on the moon or synchronised with Earth is one of the issues that needs to be resolved.
What is the Moon’s Time Zone?
A time zone for the moon is now required, similar to the GMT of the earth, which has 24 separate time zones. There are 24 different time zones on earth. Each time zone is 15 degrees broad and has a one-hour gap between two neighbouring earth zones. Beginning at the Greenwich Meridian is the zero time zone. A time zone for the moon should also be established based on its rotations and revolutions. It’s known as the Moon Time Zone.
How can the Moon Time Zone be determined?
The Moon Time Zone will be established in two methods, according to the European Space Agency, which proposed the idea. One is to only base the time on the moon’s revolutions. Synchronizing its times with the earth is the second method. For example, if it is 12 AM in London, it is 5:30 AM in India. India is five and a half hours ahead of London. Similarly, what time will it be on the moon if the time on Earth is X? Behind? or Ahead?

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Moon time and Earth time?
The duration of one earth day is 24 hours made of 12 bright hours and 12 dark hours. The lunar day meaning the length of time that one side of the moon is exposed to the sun is about 14 earth days long and the lunar night meaning the amount of time one side of the moon is exposed to the sun is 14 earth days long.
Is moon time slower than Earth?
On the Moon the acceleration of gravity is less than it is on the surface of the Earth, so the period on the Moon will be greater than it would be at Earth’s surface. This results in fewer “ticks” of the clock in a given period of time. Therefore a clock on the Moon will run slower than an identical one on Earth.
How many hour is the Moon?
A day on the Moon is 27.32 Earth days or 655.72 hours long.
