a) Vanindu Hasaranga

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has become the first spinner in ODI cricket history to take three consecutive five-wicket hauls. He achieved this feat against Ireland during the ODI World Cup qualifier. Sri Lanka beat Ireland by 133 runs at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo. He has equaled the legendary Pakistani bowler Waqar Younis in this matter.

d) UN

The world’s first international treaty to protect the high seas was adopted by the UN on June 19. It will help protect remote ecosystems that are critical for the survival of humanity.
The treaty, known as the treaty on “Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction” (BBNJ), also introduces requirements to carry out environmental impact studies for proposed activities to be carried out in international waters.

a) Spiders

Hasarius Mumbai is a newly discovered species of jumping spider. These are spiders who, instead of trapping their prey in a web, stalk and hunt them by pouncing. It has multiple eyes that give a 360-degree view of its surroundings and a bulbous body covered in hair. The word ‘Hasarius’ refers to a genus that ranks the species — of ‘jumping spiders’ in the ‘salticidae’ family. In India, there are only two other Hasarius species which have been documented, namely H. Adansoni, which is found across the country, including in urban areas, and kjellerupi, which was documented from the Nicobar Islands.

A new species of jumping spider named ‘Hasarius Mumbai’ was recently discovered from the rocks close to the streams in Goregaon East.

a) Netherlands

The Netherlands cricket team has created history by breaking the record of the biggest total of ODI cricket. During a match of the ICC ODI World Cup Qualifier-2023, Netherlands made a new record by scoring 30 runs in the super over. Netherlands all-rounder Logan van Beek scored 30 runs in the Super Over of West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder. Earlier in the history of cricket, the biggest super over total was jointly held by the West Indies men’s and West Indies women’s team. Both teams had scored a score of 25 runs.

b) Epiphyte

Epiphytes grow on another plant/tree merely for physical support, drawing moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water or from debris accumulating around it, and not from the host.
The survival of epiphytic orchids in the Dooars and Darjeeling hills are threatened due to deforestation. They are known for their medicinal properties.
