d) Watershed Development and Management

REWARD is a World Bank assisted Watershed development program which is being implemented from 2021 to 2026.
· The Development Objectives of REWARD program is to “Strengthen capacities of National and State institutions to adopt improved watershed management for increasing farmers resilience and support value chains in selected watersheds of participating States”.

· The program is being implemented to introduce modern watershed practices in the Department of Land Resources in the Ministry of Rural Development and in the States of Karnataka and Odisha.

· The total budget outlay of REWARD program is USD 167.71 million over a program period of 4.5 years.

· At the central level, the scope of the REWARD program covers management, monitoring, communication and knowledge sharing functions by DoLR.

· At the State level, the REWARD program will be contiguous in scope to the WDC-PMKSY 2.0, and support implementation of key science-based activities and demonstrations which eventually aims at synergising broader perspective of WDC-PMKSY 2.0 in other States in India.

The Secretary, Department of Land Resources (DoLR), Government of India (GoI) Shri Ajay Tirkey reviewed the Implementation Support Mission of World Bank Assisted Rejuvenating Watersheds for Agricultural Resilience through Innovative Development (REWARD) program.

b) INS Garuda

The Indian Navy along with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) released a ‘Gaganyaan Recovery Training Plan’ at the state-of-the-art Water Survival Test Facility (WSTF) at INS (Indian Naval Ship) Garuda, Kochi, Kerala.
i. The training document was jointly released by Vice Admiral Atul Anand, Director General of Naval Operations, Indian Navy, Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), and Dr Umamaheshwaran R, Director, Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of ISRO.
ii. The document provides a Training plan for the recovery of the crew module for the Gaganyan mission.

c) Kannada

A noted Kannada writer, critic and Sahitya Akademi award winner Govindaray H Nayak, popularly known as GH Nayak passed away at his residence in Mysuru, Karnataka at the age of 88.
i. Some of his notable works include Samakaleena, Anivarya, and Uttarardha.
ii. In 2014, he was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award for the compilation of his essays on literary criticism titled “Uttaraardha” (Kannada).

b) Egypt

City Of Dead is a 7 km-long UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in Egypt. It is a series of vast Islamic-era necropolises and cemeteries in Cairo.
As part of a government initiative, authorities are digging their way through this site for a highway project. Several historians and volunteers have come together to stop the historic site’s demolition.

a) GRSE

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) launched GRSE Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme – 2023 or GAINS 2023 in Kolkata.
It aims to encourage startups to develop innovative solutions towards technological advances in shipbuilding. Its focus areas include AI, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
