Delhi University renames its North Campus Mughal Garden after Gautam Buddha
Delhi University renamed the Mughal Garden on North Campus. According to officials, the gardens are now known as the Gautam Buddha Centenary Garden. This declaration comes after Rashtrapati Bhavan renamed its renowned Mughal Gardens ‘Amrit Udyan’ on Saturday.
“The competent authority of the University of Delhi has approved the name Gautam Buddha Centenary Park for the garden (next the Vice Regal Lodge) with the statue of Gautam Buddha in its centre,” said Registrar Vikas Gupta in a notification dated January 27.
Does the declaration come after Rashtrapati Bhavan renamed its renowned Mughal Gardens ‘Amrit Udyan’?
The official went on to say that the coincidence of the name change was purely coincidental and that the university had made its decision following a lengthy discussion with its Garden Committee. He said that neither the garden’s construction nor its landscape design are MughalIS.
Is Delhi University North Campus Mughal Garden have Mughal Garden Design?
The university’s justification for the rechristening, which took place on January 27, was that the garden did not have a Mughal design. The garden does, however, have a statue of Gautam Buddha that has been there for at least 15 years.
“The Mughal gardens have unique layouts that include a pond, flowing water, and two fountain cones on either side. Fruit and floral plants are seen in Mughal gardens. Fruit plants, particularly peach and litchi trees, can be seen in the Mughal garden at the Taj Mahal and other locations. This garden doesn’t have any of these traits “The official was quoted in news agency PTI.
Many botanists and horticultural experts, according to the official, have pointed this out. When questioned about the date of the name change, the official responded that they changed the park’s name in advance of the university hosting a flower exhibit in March.
“For the flower show, we want to create brochures and booklets. The Vice-Chancellor received the recommendation for the name change 15 days ago, and it is just coincidental that the Mughal Garden’s name was also altered “the representative added.
