First School of Logistics, Waterways, and Communication in India
In Agartala, the nation’s first School of Logistics, Waterways, and Communication opened its doors. The school was officially opened by Dr. Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, and Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush. The school’s mission is to develop world-class transportation and logistics specialists from the region’s abundant talent pool.
Unleashing the Northeast’s Economic Potential
The school has been established under the State Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (SIPARD) and will assist in conducting research studies, training sessions, workshops, and seminars for stakeholders including businesses, exporters, importers, Chambers of Commerce and Industries, local business owners, tour operators, etc. Along the opulent waterways of the area, the school will be empowering the intrinsic potential of human resources. This school will be crucial in achieving the promised economic potential of the Northeast.
Inland Waterways Revival
The government has been making all the necessary preparations under the energetic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to fully fuel the Northeast, the engine of the new India. In order to boost commercial and passenger travel in the area, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has been trying to revitalise the intricate inland waterways system. In addition to being a quick, economical, and clean mode of transportation, rivers provide fresh hope for the expansion of trade with the global market. The deeper, longer, and wider network of inland waterways has the potential to stimulate major economic activity and increase international trade in the area in addition to decongest and lower carbon footprints.
Investment in the National Waterways
The investment to improve National Waterways (NW) 16 (Barak) and the IBP Routes 5 & 6 and 9 & 10 for smooth connectivity within and from the region has now been increased to Rs 148 crores till 2024-25. Tripura would be connected to Kolkata/Haldia Port via IBP routes 9 and 10 as part of the PM Gati Shakti project for multi-modal connectivity, and then to Chittagong Port in Bangladesh and Sittwe Port in Myanmar. The waterways are essential in reviving the international trade between Bangladesh and Northeast India, according to Sonowal.
Inland Water Transit and Trade Protocol between India and Bangladesh
The Indo-Bangladesh Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade, which defines new steps to enable inland water trade, expand infrastructure, and improve cross-country transportation and logistics facilities, has been updated and strengthened by the two nations. In addition to the current six ports of call, five extra ports of call and two extended ports of call on each side have been agreed upon. The protocol renewal time has also been increased to five years from the previous two years. Under the Central Sector Scheme, the Indian government is funding the construction of inland waterways throughout the Northeast, including Tripura.
Entrepreneurs acquiring professional training
The recently built school in Agartala will provide business owners with the professional training they need to become authorities in international logistics and transportation. In order to enable the human resources of the area to become experts in the transportation and logistics industry and thereby unleash the economic potential of the Northeast, the school of Logistics, Waterways, and Communication will play a critical role.
