Industries in Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, the process of Industrial Development began in 1961. But the use of natural resources of state was began after First Industrial Policy (1972). In terms of Industrial development, Madhya Pradesh stood at 7th place in India and contributed more than 14 percent in revenue generation in the state.

Agro based Industries
Sugar Industry
Madhya Pradesh Sugar Industry is known to be one of the largest contributors to India’s sugar industry. The sugar industry in Madhya Pradesh is comprised of a set of sugar mills located in various parts of the city. A large part of revenue in the Indian economy is earned from its sugar industry.
- It is the second largest agro based industry in India.
- In Madhya Pradesh, the first sugar mill was established in 1934 in Jwara (Ratlam).
- Currently, there are 26 sugar manufacturing units in Madhya Pradesh.
- Major sugar mills in Madhya Pradesh- Bhopal Sugar Mill, Datiya Sugar Mill, Dabra Sugar Mill, Jiwaji Sugar Mill etc.
The Sugar Industry is the second largest industry in agricultural sector after the textile industry. There are more than 45 million sugarcane producers all over India and a large part of it goes to the Madhya Pradesh sugar industry. The production of sugarcanes in Madhya Pradesh for 2002-03 was estimated at 0.85 lakh tons but the production reached 0.94 lakh tons. In 2004-05, the production rate was 0.85 lakh tons once again.
There are 3 big sugar mills in Madhya Pradesh which are located in the state of Indore. They are:

- Girdharilal Sugar And Allied Industries
- Shiv Khandsari Sugar Mill
Cotton Textile Industry
- Madhya Pradesh is the third largest cotton producer in India. Madhya Pradesh is 3rd rank after Maharashtra and Gujrat in the textile industry.
- The largest Cotton Textile Industry in Madhya Pradesh is situated in Indore.
- First Cotton Textile Industry in Madhya Pradesh- Burhanpur (1906).
- The Indore Malwa United Mills Ltd. of Indore was established in 1907-08.
- Most Cotton Textile Industries are situated in Indore.
- Indore is also known as the Centre of Cotton Production in Madhya Pradesh.
- Apart from this Indore is also known as Financial Capital of Madhya Pradesh and Mini Bombay.
- Major cotton textile industries are located in Ujjain, Burhanpur, Bhopal, Dwas, Mandsaur and Gwalior.
Silk Industry
- Mandla is the major silk producer in the state.
- In Madhya Pradesh, the Wardha and Purna river valleys are prominent for Silk production.
- In 1984, the Silk Directorate was established under the Rural Department, Madhya Pradesh.
- The Market (mandi) of silk is situated in Mandla.
- Siwani is famous for Iri Silk production, so it is also known as Lucknow of Madhya Pradesh.
Synthetic Fibre Industry
- The largest synthetic fibre industry is situated in Nagda district of Western Malwa.
- Other manufacturing units are established in Dewas, Ujjain, Gwalior, Indore.
Vegetable Oil Industry
- The major vegetable oil manufacturing industries are situated in Malwa Plateau, Middle Marmada valley, Chambal velley, Chhindwara Plateau.
- There are 10 such industries are running in state.
- The largest vegetable oil industry is loacted in Vidisha district.
Food Processing Industry
- First Mega Food Park in Madhya Pradesh- Khargaun.
- Other public sector mega food park is situated in Mansaur, while private mega food park is situated in Dewas.
- First Food processing industry in Madhya Pradesh- Hoshangabad.
Soyabean Industry
- Madhya Pradesh (51.3 percent) is the largest soyabean producer in country.
- Soyabean oil industry- Siwani
- Soyabean biscuit industry- Bhopal
- Asia’s largest Soyabean industry is located in Ujjain.
- India’s largest cooperative Soyabean industry is located in Siwani.

Paper Industry
- The first paper Mill in Madhya Pradesh as National News Print and Paper Mill was established in 1956 in Burhanpur.
- During the holiday plan, the Security Paper Mill was established in Hoshangabad in 1968, where the stamp paper and currency notes are produced.
- Bank Note Press was established in 1974 in Dewas.
- Tissue Paper industry was established in Mahu (Indore).
Bidi Industry
- Madhya Pradesh produced 60 percent of Tendu leaves in country.
- Major Bidi industries- Jabalpur, Sagar, Katni, Damoh
Plywood Industry
- First Plywood industry in 1964 in Itarsi.
- Other industries- Chhindwara and Betul
Mineral based industry
Cement Industry
- Madhya Pradesh is the third largest cement producer in India.
- First cement industry in state- Morena (1922).

- 6 units are situated in Bhopal, Mandla, Dhar, Sehore, Jabalpur.
- Industrial Gas Plant is located in Guna
Automobile Industry
- Indore and Pithampur (Dhar) are major automobile industrial centres.
- Tyre and tube industry- Betul and Pithampur.
Rail Equipment Industry
- Rail Spring Industry- Gwalior.
- Rail Coach Factory- Bhopal.
- Electric Engine Factory- Bhopal
- Diesel Engine Factory- Indore and Vidisha
- First Diesel Locomotive Unit of Madhya Pradesh- Sehore
Heavy Electric industry
- With the help of Britain, the Heavy Electricals (India) Limited was established in 1956 in Bhopal.
- Later it was renamed as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited.
