NAMASTE (National Action Plan for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) scheme
The Government of India allotted Rs 100 crores for the NAMASTE scheme in the Union Budget 2023. The GoI hopes to automate septic tank and sewer cleaning in towns and cities with this. The programme intends to give sanitation workers a different source of income. NAMASTE will also make an effort to improve their conduct.
NAMASTE Scheme Objectives
- To eliminate all fatalities from the sanitation sector
- No sanitation employee will handle or come into contact with faeces directly.
- Self-Help Groups will be encouraged to be formed by the sanitation personnel.
- As mechanisation may result in the loss of a small number of jobs in the industry, make sure the workers have access to alternate means of support.
NAMSTE Scheme implementation strategy
In the first phase, 500 cities are chosen. GoI intends to start with AMRUT cities. Cities with a population of more than a lakh people would also be the first to be targeted. Ten cities will be chosen from islands, mountainous areas, and tourist hotspots. It is exceedingly challenging to shift tourism locations in the wastewater industry. This is due to the tourist destinations’ high capacity. Because of this, there are extremely few people working in the tourism industry.
