SSLV-D2: ISRO Launches Second Development Flight Of Its Smallest Rocket
The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) was successfully launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) . It was launched from Sriharikota. EOS-07, Azzzadi SAT-2, and Janus-1 satellites were all dropped by the SSLV-D2. Within 15 minutes of the launch, the satellites were dropped at a distance of 450 kilometers from the earth.
Launch of SSLV-D2
SSLV has a payload capacity of up to 500 kg. One of ISRO’s low-cost spacecraft, it has a very short turnaround time, can carry multiple satellites, and requires very less launch infrastructure.
ES-07
It was developed by ISRO. It weighs 156 kg. It carries a spectrum monitoring payload and humidity sounder. It is an earth observation satellite.
Janus-1
The satellite was developed by the USA. The weight of the satellite was 10.2 kg. It is a demonstration satellite developed by ANTARIS.
Azaadi SAT-2
It was developed by SpaceKidz India. Around 750 girl students participated in developing the satellite. The satellite has voice and data transmission equipment, a selfie camera, and also UHF and VHF transponders.
SSLV-D1
It was a failure since the rocket failed to place the satellites in the proper orbit. ISRO recently released the reasons for the mission’s failure in its analysis report.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What does SSLV stand for?
SSLV Stands for Small Satellite Launch Vehicle.
What is the capability of SSLV?
SSLV has been designed to meet “Launch on Demand” requirements in a cost-effective manner. It is 3 stage all solid vehicle with a capability to launch upto 500 kg satellite mass into 500 km LEO.
What is the need of SSLV in India?
It can carry satellites weighing up to 500 kg to low earth orbit and provides an alternative to ISRO’s current workhorse, the PSLV. The latter can carry satellites weighing in the range of 1,000 kg. The SSLV is also capable of multiple orbital drop-offs, which allows it to launch multiple microsatellites in one launch.
Is SSLV reusable?
SSLV will be one of India’s key lightweight and reusable commercial rockets alongside those being built by private space startups in the country. Source- https://www.livemint.com/news/india/isro-to-launch-sslv-by-august-says-senior-scientist-11656062849497.html
How many stages are there in SSLV?
Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) is a 3 stage Launch Vehicle configured with three Solid Propulsion Stages and liquid propulsion based Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) as a terminal stage. SSLV is 2m in diameter and 34m in length with lift off weight of ~120 tonnes.
