World Hindi Day 2023
World Hindi Day or Vishwa Hindi Diwas is observed on 10th January every year to promote awareness about the language across the world. The first time Hindi, the national language of India, was spoken at the UN General Assembly occurred on this day as well. The inaugural World Hindi Conference took place in Nagpur on this day in 1975. Since, these conferences are held annually in various locations across the globe.
Notably: The language gained its name from the Persian phrase ‘Hind’ which meaning ‘the land of Indus’. India, Trinidad, Nepal, Guyana, Mauritius, and other nations all have native speakers of the language Hindi.
World Hindi Conference 2023 Theme
“Hindi – Traditional Knowledge to Artificial Intelligence” is the theme for this year. The Foreign Ministry will work with the Fijian government to organise the 12th World Hindi Conference, which will take place there from February 15 to 17. During the 11th World Hindi Conference, which was held in Mauritius the previous year, the venue for the event in 2023 was chosen.
World Hindi Day 2023: Its Importance
Vishwa Hindi Diwas, also known as World Hindi Day, is observed to recognise the significance of Hindi as a language. In India, especially in the north, it is regarded as one of the official national languages. On a global scale, the day is also observed to reflect the Hindi-speaking population. The Ministry of External Affairs organises a number of events worldwide to raise awareness of Hindi on the occasion of World Hindi Day.
World Hindi Day’s history
Hindi became the official language of the Union of India in 1950. The official language of India is designated as Hindi in Devanagari script in Article 343 of the Indian Constitution. Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha, had the idea for the inaugural World Hindi Conference in 1973. On January 10, 1975, Nagpur hosted it. Its goal was to spread the language throughout the world. A total of 122 representatives from 30 nations attended the conference.
Vishwa Hindi Diwas was first observed in 2006, at the request of then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The date of January 10 was chosen since it was on that day in 1949 that Hindi was first spoken in the UN General Assembly. In 1975, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi established the World Hindi Conference with the goal of bringing together Hindi academics, writers, and laureates who have contributed to the growth of the language and value their efforts.
How is World Hindi Day Celebrated?
World Hindi Day is celebrated with great fanfare by the Ministry of External Affairs, both nationally and globally. The promotion of Hindi will take place through a range of activities, such as poetry readings, quizzes, cultural events, speech competitions, and debates. The expansion of Hindi as a language is also commemorated by the Indian Postal Department with the issuing of special commemorative stamps.
According to the 2011 census, 43.63% of the population in India speaks Hindi, making it the most widely spoken language. There are 430 million native Hindi speakers in the world.
