Yaya Tso Lake to be Ladakh’s First Biodiversity Heritage Site
Yaya Tso, often known as the Bird’s Paradise, is a lake in Ladakh. The lake is 4,820 kilometers above sea level. The lake is a well-liked location for black-necked cranes to breed. Recently, the lake was designated as a “Biodiversity Heritage Site.” It is Ladakh’s first location designated as a Biosphere Reserve.

Together declared the Yaya Tso Lake a Biodiversity Heritage site.
Biodiversity Heritage Sites (BHS)
Under the Biological Diversity Act of 2002, any State Government must notify a site that it is a BHS. The site should be under its jurisdiction.. High endemism, domesticated species, and rare and endangered species can all be found in the BHS.
- These are areas that are unique, ecologically fragile ecosystems having a rich biodiversity.
- The Indian State Government can notify the Biodiversity Heritage Sites in consultation with local governing bodies under Section 37 of the Biological Diversity Act of 2002.
- India has 36 Biodiversity Heritage Sites spread across several states to date. The most recent addition was the Mahendragiri hill Biodiversity Heritage Site in Odisha.

The project’s primary goal is to protect Snow leopards in the area. It also addresses habitat destruction, affected livelihoods, and illegal wildlife trade. The project’s funding comes from the Global Environment Facility.
Section 37 of Biological Diversity Act, 2002
According to the provisions in Section 37 of the act, the Biodiversity Heritage sites are declared. According to the statute, these regions are fragile and unique. A biodiversity heritage site designation can be given to any landform. It can include inland waters, coastal areas, highland areas, and marine environments.
- The State Governments shall create regulations under the act.
- Section 3 of the act gives the state government power to rehabilitate communities in areas designated as Biodiversity Heritage Sites.
